The Triton 2 OCT is an advanced, non-invasive eye scanner that acts like a “3D radar” for the back of the eye. It allows specialists to look beneath the surface of the retina and optic nerve, where the earliest signs of serious eye disease often develop long before a patient notices any loss of vision.
Using a safe, invisible beam of light, the Triton 2 creates highly detailed, layered images of the eye’s internal structures. This fast, painless scan provides immediate information that cannot be seen during a standard eye examination.
The machine is vital for detecting and monitoring major causes of blindness, including glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy. By identifying subtle changes earlier, clinicians can intervene sooner and protect patients’ sight.
Adding a Triton 2 in the main Eye Day Care Unit at Basingstoke Hospital directly addresses significant physical and logistical challenges faced by elderly and frail patients. Currently, many patients must walk long distances across the hospital to access the existing scanner. A second machine located within the unit will reduce physical strain, shorten waiting times, and create a more dignified, efficient pathway of care.
With approximately 2,700 patients attending the diabetic eye injection clinic and a further 2,000 patients managed through virtual retinal clinics each year, over 4,500 patients annually would benefit from this investment.
