to hear from Natasha Aldous-Holloway, Band 4 Rehab Assistant in Critical Care, about the MotoMed Loop LA Prof and how it will benefit patients in the Basingstoke & North Hampshire Hospital.

A piece of equipment that is widely used within rehab centres and critical care departments are MotoMed cycles. Currently, Basingstoke Hospital have a MotoMed for patients use whilst in bed, but this appeal is for the MotoMed Loop LA which will enable individuals to continue and build on progress made with the existing model.

Motivational therapy programmes can be used to engage individuals in their therapy on the 7 inch colour touch screen, as well as using USB slideshows and videos that enable them to visualise their goals/journey. Whilst cycling with this model, spasms can be detected and eased with an automatic change in direction. It can also detect increased muscle tone and stop if necessary. The MotoMed can be used for passive and active exercise and provides clear data analysis of individual’s strength and symmetry.

Exercising and early mobilisation in critical care can reduce mortality and length of hospital stay and promote a healthy lifestyle. The MotoMed Loop LA is widely used therapeutically for patients with:

  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Stroke
  • Spinal Cord Injury (complete and incomplete)
  • Spastic paralysis
  • Brain Injury (TBI, Apallic syndrome etc.)
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Spina Bifida
  • Guillain-Barre-Syndrome
  • Poliomyelitis
  • MND
  • Muscular Dystrophy
  • Spinal and Neural Muscular Atrophy
  • Polyneuropathy
  • Hip and Knee Endoprosthesis

“This model of MotoMed will be incredibly useful for patients in HDU and ITU who are trying to progress with mobility, lower limb, upper limb and core strengthening and can be great for mental wellbeing. This product is portable and easy to clean, allowing each bed space the benefit of using the machine. It is height adjustable and can be used for anyone in a chair, wheelchair or therapy chair and has an interactive screen to promote an individual’s engagement with their therapy. Attachments allow individuals with upper limb weakness to be able to use the machine safely and the bike can facilitate passive and active exercise. The unit is expanding to a capacity of 18 beds – on a day where we are full I anticipate that approximately one half of these patients would be suitable to use and benefit from MotoMed. Therapists run a seven day service and Nurses could also be trained to use the machine if Therapists are unavailable, therefore it could be used 365 days a year.”
