Stroke is the leading cause of adult disability in the UK. At Winchester Hospital, stroke admissions have risen by 56% since before the pandemic, and around 80% of patients experience reduced arm function. Yet only 5–20% will make a full recovery.

National NICE guidelines now recommend high-intensity daily rehabilitation to maximise recovery, but rising patient numbers and workforce shortages mean this level of therapy is increasingly difficult to deliver consistently.

The Fourier M2 Robotics System is an advanced neuro-rehabilitation device that combines robotics and gamification to deliver intensive, repetitive, task-specific arm therapy. This advanced and innovative technology enables more intensive and effective therapy, helping stroke patients regain independence faster and transforms long-term recovery outcomes.

This technology will enable the stroke team to deliver more therapy minutes per patient without proportional increases in staffing, transforming rehabilitation capacity and outcomes. With 955 stroke admissions last year and approximately 760 patients experiencing arm weakness, this system has the potential to improve recovery and outcomes for hundreds of patients annually.

Key Benefits

  • Enables High-Intensity Therapy – Supports compliance with updated NICE stroke rehabilitation guidance
  • More therapy per patient – Enables delivery of more therapy minutes per patient. This will address current rehabilitation shortfalls and maximise each patient’s recovery potential
  • Restores Lost Arm Function – Evidence-based robotic therapy improves meaningful recovery rates
  • Improves Independence – Helps patients regain dignity, confidence and daily living skills. Restoring arm function reduces reliance on carers and allows people to return to family life and work
  • Reduces Length of Stay – Faster functional gains support earlier, safer discharge. This reduces the risk of long-term dependency and helps ease pressure on NHS stroke services
  • Relieves Workforce Pressure – Expands rehabilitation capacity despite rising admissions
