to hear from Helen Oliver, Speech and Language Therapist, about the Laryngograph Microprocessor Speech Studio and how it will help patients across Hampshire.

The Laryngograph enables patients to see a visual representation of their voice quality by applying electrodes to either side of the patient’s larynx (voice box). This is an invaluable tool in voice therapy, particularly when patients find it difficult to adjust their voice as required, i.e. to eliminate negative vocal behaviour. The graphs produced by the Laryngograph enable patients with disordered voices to develop greater control over their voice production and thus ensure they are able to stay within optimal vocal parameters.

“The Laryngograph is the market leader in speech analysis software, enabling patients to link their physical vocal patterns with their auditory perception.  It has the capability to analyse speech output to a highly sophisticated level and ‘provides the world’s most powerful and compact voice analysis system for normal and pathological connected speech and sustained vowels’.

Much of voice therapy relies on patients being able to hear or feel what they are inadvertently doing incorrectly; the Laryngograph provides objective, visual feedback to support this process and is a powerful means by which to encourage lasting vocal change”
