When a patient presents with a suspicious breast lesion, a biopsy is essential to determine whether it is benign or cancerous. This diagnosis is critical — providing reassurance for many, and enabling timely, accurate treatment planning for those with breast cancer.
Currently, most biopsies are performed using a core needle technique. While effective, this method often requires multiple needle insertions and may not obtain sufficient tissue, leading to repeat procedures, delays in diagnosis, and increased anxiety and discomfort for patients.
The BD EleVation™ Vacuum-Assisted Breast Biopsy (VABB) System represents a significant advancement in breast diagnostics. Using vacuum suction combined with a cutting needle, the system removes a larger, higher quality tissue samples through a single insertion. This improves diagnostic accuracy, reduces the need for repeat biopsies, and enhances the overall patient experience including reduced anxiety.
Studies show significantly lower re-biopsy rates with vacuum-assisted biopsy (2.5–9%) compared to standard core needle biopsy (11.3–14.9%). By enabling faster, more reliable diagnoses, the BD EleVation™ system will benefit approximately 400 patients each year across HHFT, with numbers expected to rise as referrals increase. The equipment will be used at Basingstoke Hospital.
