Ultrasound scanning is one of the most widely used diagnostic tools across the Trust, supporting approximately 17,000 patients each year. However, traditional wired probes place significant physical strain on sonographers. Nationally, around 75% of non-obstetric sonographers develop musculoskeletal (MSK) problems, often leading to pain, injury and time off work.

At HHFT, around 30% of patients scanned are obese, immobile, or both. Fixed room layouts and limited cable length can make it difficult to position equipment optimally, forcing clinicians to overstretch or work in awkward positions in order to obtain clear images.

Wireless ultrasound probes are lightweight and cable-free, allowing sonographers to move freely around the patient rather than requiring patients to twist or reposition uncomfortably. This reduces strain on clinicians’ arms and wrists while improving comfort for patients. The technology also enables bedside scanning in wards, theatres, paediatric areas and recovery rooms, increasing flexibility and responsiveness across the hospital.

Clearer imaging for complex patients can reduce the need for further investigations such as MRI or CT scans, supporting faster diagnosis and reducing pressure on other services. Four probes — one per site — would benefit approximately 17,000 patients annually across the Trust.

Key Benefits

  • Reduces Staff Injury – Minimises MSK strain and supports workforce wellbeing
    • Improves Patient Comfort – Allows clinicians to move freely rather than repositioning immobile patients
    • Better Imaging for Complex Patients – Particularly valuable for obese or mobility-limited individuals
    • Supports Bedside & Theatre Scanning – Enables flexible use across wards and departments
    • Reduces Need for Further Imaging – Clearer ultrasound images may prevent additional MRI or CT scans
    • Faster Diagnosis & Treatment – Better images reduce impact on other services and enable faster diagnosis and treatment leading to reduced hospital stays

By investing in wireless ultrasound probes, HHFT will protect the health of its skilled sonographers, enhance patient comfort, and improve diagnostic efficiency across all four hospital sites (Basingstoke, Winchester, Andover and Alton) – strengthening both staff wellbeing and patient care for thousands each year.
