The insertion of a PICC line is essential for many cancer patients for the delivery of chemotherapy treatment and they remain in place for up to 18 months. A PICC line is usually inserted into a vein in the patient’s upper arm and is an unpleasant procedure. Without the PICC placement system cancer sufferers, already undergoing a gruelling treatment programme, will need to go to theatre and have the PICC line inserted with an X Ray confirming it is correctly positioned or practitioners go in ‘blind’ with the danger of multiple cannulation attempts.
